The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is one of the most recognised qualifications for construction site managers and those looking to move into supervisory roles. With remote work and digital learning becoming the norm, many UK construction professionals are asking: can you do SMSTS course online?
The short answer is yes. CITB, the Construction Industry Training Board, now fully recognises online SMSTS courses that meet their strict requirements. Below we explore how this works, what you need to know before booking, and how to ensure you gain a valid, industry-approved certificate.
What is an SMSTS course?
SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme, a five-day programme designed to help site managers, agents, and supervisors understand their legal and moral responsibilities when it comes to health and safety on construction sites.
It covers crucial topics such as:
- Health and safety law and regulations
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Site set-up and CDM regulations
- Accident prevention and reporting
- Environmental management
On completion and passing the exam, delegates receive a CITB certificate valid for five years.
Yes, you can take SMSTS training online
CITB now permits SMSTS online training, provided it is delivered by an Approved Training Organisation (ATO). The course content, duration, and exam remain identical to the classroom version. The only difference is the delivery method: you attend remotely using a platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
This means you can complete your training from home, office, or site office without travelling to a training centre, while still earning a fully valid CITB certificate.
How online SMSTS courses work
An online SMSTS course with an accredited provider such as Target Zero follows the same five-day structure as classroom training.
1. Pre-course checks
You will receive joining instructions and be required to check your computer’s camera, microphone, and internet connection. CITB rules require a live video connection for the entire course.
2. Interactive live sessions
A qualified CITB trainer delivers the course live. You can ask questions in real time, join group discussions, and complete group exercises just as you would in a physical classroom.
3. Daily assessments and final exam
Delegates take part in daily exercises and complete a final multiple-choice exam, which is proctored online to maintain integrity.
Advantages of doing the SMSTS course online
Save time and travel costs
You can attend from anywhere in the UK, avoiding commuting and accommodation expenses.
Flexible learning
Many providers, including Target Zero, offer block bookings (five consecutive days) or day-release options (e.g. one day a week for five weeks) to suit your schedule.
Identical certification
An online SMSTS certificate is exactly the same as one obtained in person and is recognised by employers, main contractors, and CSCS card schemes.
What you need for an online SMSTS course
Before booking your online SMSTS course, make sure you have:
- A desktop or laptop with a stable internet connection (not a mobile phone)
- A webcam and microphone for live attendance verification
- A quiet space free from distractions for the full duration of each session
- Valid photo ID for the CITB exam check
These requirements are set by CITB to ensure the course is delivered to the same standard as in-person training.
Cost and duration of SMSTS online training
The standard SMSTS course lasts five days. Many providers, including Target Zero, offer both weekday and weekend schedules to fit around busy site work.
Prices typically start from around £450 + VAT, depending on the provider and whether the course is block or day release.

Renewing your SMSTS certificate online
SMSTS certificates are valid for five years. To remain qualified, you must complete the two-day SMSTS Refresher course before your current certificate expires.
The refresher is also available fully online and follows the same CITB standards.
Common questions about online SMSTS courses
Is the SMSTS exam harder online?
No. The exam content and pass mark are identical whether you study online or in a classroom.
Is online SMSTS accepted by employers?
Yes. The certificate issued by CITB is identical and fully recognised across the UK construction industry.
Can I join with a tablet or phone?
CITB recommends a desktop or laptop for best results. Tablets may be acceptable if they have a stable camera and microphone, but phones are not allowed.
