What Is the CITB SMSTS Course?
The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course is one of the most respected qualifications for construction site managers and supervisors. It’s designed to give professionals a deeper understanding of health and safety responsibilities, legal requirements, and effective site management practices.
At Target Zero Training, we deliver the SMSTS course through qualified tutors who bring years of site experience to every session. Whether you take it online or in person, this five-day course gives you the knowledge and confidence to lead safely and effectively.
Who Should Take the SMSTS Course?
The SMSTS course is ideal for:
- Site Managers and Project Leaders
- Supervisors preparing for management roles
- Construction professionals responsible for planning, organising, and monitoring safety
If you already hold an SSSTS qualification, the SMSTS course is your natural next step. It builds on your existing knowledge and equips you with the strategic mindset needed to run a safe, compliant site.
What You’ll Learn During the SMSTS Course
Throughout the five-day programme, delegates explore key areas including:
- Construction law, CDM regulations, and risk assessment
- Health and safety management systems
- Environmental and welfare responsibilities
- Toolbox talks and communication strategies
- Leadership and team coordination
By the end of the course, you’ll have the tools to maintain high safety standards, prevent incidents, and ensure legal compliance across your projects.
Assessment and Certification
The SMSTS course includes group activities, case studies, and a multiple-choice exam at the end. Once you pass, you’ll receive an official CITB SMSTS certificate, valid for five years.
Before it expires, you can renew your qualification by completing the SMSTS Refresher course, which is a two-day condensed version.
We also provide SMSTS Mock Tests to help you prepare confidently and get familiar with the exam format.
Benefits of Completing the SMSTS Course
- Recognised Qualification: The CITB SMSTS certificate is accepted by employers across the UK construction industry.
- Improved Career Prospects: Completing the course shows you can manage safety, people, and processes effectively.
