If you work in site management or construction supervision, holding an SMSTS qualification is often mandatory. But many professionals aren’t sure about when or why they need to take the SMSTS refresher course. In this blog, we’ll break it down for you.
So let’s answer the big question: Do I need an SMSTS refresher course?
What Is the SMSTS Refresher Course?
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) Refresher is a 1-day course designed for anyone who has already completed the full 5-day SMSTS course and wants to renew their certificate before it expires.
The SMSTS qualification is valid for 5 years, after which you must either:
- Take the 1-day refresher course, or
- Retake the full 5-day course from scratch if your certificate has expired
Do I Qualify for the Refresher Course?
You qualify if:
- You hold a valid SMSTS certificate
- Your certificate has not expired
You do not qualify if your certificate has already expired — even by a few days. In that case, you’ll need to complete the full SMSTS course again.
Important: You must submit your existing certificate number at the time of booking.
Why Take the Refresher Course?
Failing to refresh your certificate in time can be costly:
- Time – you’ll need to take 5 days off work
- Money – the full course is more expensive
- Opportunities – many contractors won’t let you manage a site without it
Taking the refresher course on time ensures:
- You stay compliant with CITB and HSE requirements
- You’re aware of the latest legislation, updates, and best practices
- You continue working without interruption or delays
When Should I Book My SMSTS Refresher?
We recommend booking it 3 to 6 months before your certificate expires. This gives you enough flexibility to rearrange if needed and ensures you don’t miss the cut-off.
Can I Take the SMSTS Refresher Course Online?
Absolutely. The SMSTS Refresher is available online and delivered via live virtual classroom.
You’ll benefit from:
- Real-time instructor-led sessions
- Group discussions and case studies
- No need to travel – just join from your laptop
- A CITB certificate valid for another 5 years
As long as you attend the session and pass the final assessment, you’re good to go.
What Happens If I Miss the Deadline?
If your SMSTS certificate expires:
- You’re no longer eligible for the 1-day refresher
- You must enrol in the full 5-day SMSTS course again
- You risk delays on site or missed job opportunities
There are no exceptions — so it’s best to act early.
