If you already hold an SMSTS certificate, keeping it valid is essential for your career, your compliance, and your credibility on construction sites across the United Kingdom. The SMSTS Refresher Course is the official CITB route to renew your qualification and maintain your status as a competent site manager.
At Target Zero we deliver approved CITB SMSTS Refresher Courses online and across the United Kingdom to help you renew your certificate quickly, confidently, and without downtime.
This guide explains when you need the refresher, what the course covers, and why renewing on time is crucial for your site management role.
What Is the SMSTS Refresher
The SMSTS Refresher is a two day course designed for managers and supervisors who already hold a valid SMSTS certificate. It updates your knowledge of legislation, safety responsibilities, risk controls, and modern best practice across construction environments.
You can view dates and locations for our CITB approved programme here at SMSTS Refresher Training.
When Do You Need to Renew Your SMSTS Certificate
Your SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. To keep it active you must complete the SMSTS Refresher Course before your certificate expires. CITB does not allow late renewals. If your certificate expires you must take the full five day SMSTS course again.
Renewing on time protects your role as a site manager because many employers require a valid and current SMSTS certificate for compliance, insurance, and client approvals.
If your certificate is due to expire within the next six months, now is the ideal time to book your refresher.
What the SMSTS Refresher Course Covers
Our SMSTS Refresher Course updates your knowledge in key areas including:
- Construction Design and Management Regulations
- Health and Safety at Work Act
- Recent changes to UK safety legislation
- Updated guidance and industry best practice
- Working at Height
- Fire Safety
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Site planning and welfare
- Behavioural safety and leadership
Training is delivered by experienced instructors who use real examples and live case studies to strengthen your understanding and help you apply the learning on site immediately.
Is the SMSTS Refresher Mandatory
For most employers yes. While not written in law, SMSTS has become the standard qualification for anyone managing, monitoring, or supervising construction sites. An expired SMSTS certificate could affect your job role, your approval to work on certain project sites, and your ability to meet client requirements.
Keeping your qualification up to date proves that you understand current legislation, modern safety expectations, and your responsibilities as a manager.
