What Is the SMSTS Certificate?
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is one of the most respected qualifications for construction site managers and supervisors. Accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), it ensures that managers understand the latest legislation, risk assessments, and best practice for keeping a construction site safe.
But how long does an SMSTS certificate actually last, and what should you do when it’s about to expire?
How Long Does SMSTS Last?
An SMSTS certificate is valid for five years from the date of issue. After those five years, the certificate expires, and you can no longer rely on it to demonstrate compliance with health and safety law.
To maintain your qualification, you must complete an SMSTS refresher course before the expiry date.
Key takeaway: Book your SMSTS renewal course well before the five-year deadline to avoid any gap in compliance.
What Happens If You Miss the Renewal Date?
If your certificate expires, you cannot simply take the refresher. You will need to retake the full five-day SMSTS course. This is more time-consuming and costly than booking a CITB SMSTS refresher on time.
When Should You Book an SMSTS Refresher?
The best time to book is six months before the expiry date. This ensures you can choose a convenient date and format – either online or at a location near you.
Target Zero makes booking simple through our secure online system:

What Does the SMSTS Refresher Course Cover?
The SMSTS refresher is designed to bring you up to date with the latest changes in construction health and safety law and site management practices. It typically includes:
- Updated legislation and HSE guidance
- Risk assessment and method statement updates
- Environmental management and sustainability
- Leadership and behavioural safety strategies
It is a two-day course (online or classroom) and is fully approved by CITB.
