If you already hold a valid Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate and need to renew it, the SMSTS Refresher is the quickest and most efficient route. At Target Zero Training, we make it simple to stay qualified and up to date with the latest construction health and safety standards.
You can view our CITB SMSTS Refresher course for available dates and booking options, or read about the full CITB SMSTS training course if you are new to site management. To help you prepare, we also recommend practising with our SMSTS mock tests before attending your training.
How long is the SMSTS Refresher course?
The SMSTS Refresher at Target Zero Training takes 2 days to complete.
It is designed for those who already hold a valid SMSTS certificate and simply need to refresh their knowledge, update their understanding of legislation, and maintain compliance with CITB standards.
The two-day structure allows you to renew your qualification without committing to the full five-day programme. Whether you choose to attend online through our instructor-led sessions or in person at one of our training venues, you must complete both days in full to qualify.
Why does the SMSTS Refresher take two days?
The refresher focuses on updates and practical application rather than repeating the full course. Across the two days, our expert tutors cover:
- Recent changes in construction legislation and site safety law
- Updated health and safety best practices
- Effective leadership for safe site management
- Assessment preparation and revision support
Because the course is designed for experienced site managers, it is intensive yet highly focused. You will leave with a renewed understanding of your responsibilities and a certificate valid for another five years.
SMSTS Refresher vs Full SMSTS Course
| Course | Duration | Who it’s for | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full SMSTS Course | 5 days | New or returning site managers who need the full qualification | View full course |
| SMSTS Refresher | 2 days | Current certificate holders needing renewal | View refresher course |
If your existing SMSTS certificate has expired beyond the grace period, you’ll need to retake the full 5-day SMSTS course to regain certification.
Who can attend the SMSTS Refresher?
To be eligible for the refresher, you must:
- Hold a valid SMSTS certificate (or one that has recently expired)
- Provide evidence of your previous qualification before starting the course
- Be able to attend both training days in full
If your SMSTS certificate has expired for a long period, our team will advise whether you need to complete the full SMSTS course instead.
How to prepare for your SMSTS Refresher
We always recommend that delegates refresh their knowledge before attending. You can use our free SMSTS mock tests to get familiar with the types of questions and topics covered in your assessment. This helps you feel confident and focused when the course begins.
You should also:
- Review recent changes in construction safety law
- Prepare examples from your own work experience to discuss during sessions
- Ensure your internet connection and workspace are ready if training online
