If you’re working as a site manager in construction, the SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is a vital qualification. It proves you have the knowledge to manage health and safety on site and demonstrates compliance with industry standards. But how long does the SMSTS course last — and when do you need to take a refresher?
How Long the SMSTS Course Lasts
The full SMSTS training course runs over five consecutive days. During this time, you’ll cover health and safety legislation, site management responsibilities, risk assessments, and best practices for safe site leadership.
Once you pass the course, you’ll receive a CITB-accredited SMSTS certificate that remains valid for five years. To stay compliant, you must keep this qualification up to date.

When You Need a Refresher
The SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. After this period, you must renew your qualification by completing an SMSTS Refresher course.
If you let your certificate expire, you cannot take the refresher — instead, you’ll have to sit the full five-day SMSTS course again. That’s why it’s important to plan ahead and book your refresher before your certificate runs out.
