At Target Zero Training, we help construction professionals move up the career ladder with accredited health and safety qualifications. One question we hear often is whether our CITB SMSTS Training Courses can help delegates achieve the prestigious Black CSCS Manager Card.
The short answer is yes — as part of the overall pathway. Here’s how.
Understanding the Black CSCS Card
The Black CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Card proves senior-level competence in construction management. It is widely recognised by major contractors and clients as evidence that you can manage projects safely, legally and efficiently.
To qualify, you need:
- A Level 6 or Level 7 NVQ in a relevant management discipline such as Construction Site Management or Construction Senior Management
- A pass in the CITB Managers & Professionals Health, Safety and Environment Test
- Proven site management experience
SMSTS is not a direct replacement for these requirements, but it plays an important supporting role.
How SMSTS Supports Your Black Card Journey
Our SMSTS Training Courses give you the health and safety leadership skills that underpin both NVQ assessments and the CITB test. Delegates learn to:
- Plan, monitor and control site operations to meet legal requirements
- Conduct detailed risk assessments and implement control measures
- Lead teams and build a proactive safety culture
These competencies feed directly into the evidence you will need for your NVQ portfolio and make the Managers & Professionals test easier to pass.
Flexible Training That Fits Your Schedule
Target Zero delivers SMSTS training nationwide and online, so you can choose the option that suits you:
- Online live instructor-led courses for maximum convenience
- Classroom sessions in Chelmsford, London, Manchester, and other key UK locations
Every course is fully CITB approved and led by experienced trainers who bring real-world construction knowledge to every session.
Building a Complete Pathway
Many delegates combine SMSTS with our higher-level NVQs to fast-track their Black CSCS Card application:
- Start with SMSTS to gain advanced site safety and management knowledge.
- Progress to a Level 6 or 7 NVQ in construction management, using SMSTS as supporting evidence.
- Take the CITB Managers & Professionals Test and submit your application for the Black Card.
Our team can guide you through each stage to ensure a smooth journey from supervisor to senior site manager.
