The construction industry is constantly evolving – and so are the demands placed on those managing sites. Whether you're a seasoned professional or newly stepping into a supervisory role, site safety management training is no longer optional – it's essential.
Why Site Management Training Matters
Construction sites are high-risk environments. Without proper oversight, hazards multiply, productivity dips, and legal responsibilities can be compromised. Site managers are expected to:
- Ensure health and safety regulations are followed
- Oversee teams and subcontractors effectively
- Manage resources, timelines, and budgets
- Maintain compliance with ever-changing legislation
Without formal training, even experienced workers can find themselves out of their depth.
What is SMSTS Training?
The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is the gold standard for those managing or planning to manage on UK construction sites. This five-day course equips site managers with the knowledge and confidence to uphold safety, efficiency, and compliance across all levels of site operation.
Key topics include:
- Health and safety legislation
- Risk assessments and method statements
- CDM regulations
- Occupational health
- Working at height and confined spaces
Upon completion, you’ll receive a CITB-accredited certificate valid for five years.

When Do You Need an SMSTS Refresher?
If you’ve already completed the full SMSTS course, your certificate remains valid for five years. To keep your certification active, you must complete a two-day SMSTS Refresher before expiry.
This refresher updates your knowledge with the latest legislation, best practices, and site management responsibilities, ensuring you remain a compliant and effective leader.
