If you're working in construction management or supervision, you've likely heard of SMSTS – but what does it really mean, and how does it impact your career? In this guide, we’ll break down the SMSTS meaning, how to get your SMSTS certificate, what the SMSTS test includes, and where to find reliable exam questions and mock tests to prepare.
What Does SMSTS Mean?
SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme, a CITB-accredited course designed for construction site managers, supervisors, and those with health and safety responsibilities. The course ensures you understand legal responsibilities, risk assessments, and how to maintain a safe site for your team and the public.

SMSTS Certificate – Why It Matters
Once you complete the course and pass the exam, you receive an SMSTS certificate, which is valid for five years. This certificate is essential for demonstrating compliance with the Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM) and is often a requirement for site manager roles.
If your certificate is due to expire, you must complete the SMSTS Refresher before the five-year mark to stay valid.

What’s in the SMSTS Test?
The SMSTS test is taken at the end of the five-day course. It includes:
- Multiple-choice questions
- Written answers based on real-world scenarios
- Health & safety case studies
- Topics like CDM Regulations, Working at Height, and Environmental Awareness
Passing this test shows you're ready to manage safety on-site effectively.
Can I Get a Black CSCS Card with SMSTS?
No – SMSTS alone does not qualify you for a black CSCS card. The black card requires a Level 6 NVQ in Construction Site Management. However, SMSTS is still highly regarded by employers and often required alongside an NVQ for leadership roles.
