When it comes to managing a construction site, safety isn’t just a legal requirement – it’s a leadership responsibility. That’s why the CITB SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) course has become a must-have qualification for site managers, supervisors, and project leads across the UK. For those based in Essex, the SMSTS classroom course in Chelmsford is the ideal way to upskill in a focused, in-person environment.
Why Choose the Classroom Option?
While online training may suit some, the classroom format offers several key advantages. At Target Zero’s Chelmsford venue, delegates benefit from real-time engagement with expert trainers, group discussions that bring the course content to life, and the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences with peers from the industry.
This hands-on, collaborative setting helps reinforce key concepts and ensures learners leave the course not just with knowledge – but with confidence to apply it.
What the Course Covers
The SMSTS course runs over five consecutive days and covers the full spectrum of site safety management. Topics include:
- Health and Safety at Work Act responsibilities
- Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Working at height, scaffolding, excavations, and demolition
- Site setup and welfare facilities
- Fire prevention and hazardous substances

- Leadership and effective communication on site
The course uses the latest CITB materials, including the XA6 workbook and GE700 manual, which delegates will use during both classroom sessions and the final assessment.
Final Assessment
On the last day, learners complete a 35-minute written exam consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions. A minimum score of 81% is required to pass, and successful delegates receive a CITB-accredited certificate valid for five years.
