8 September 2025

4 min read

If your schedule makes weekday training difficult, a SMSTS course weekend format can be the perfect solution. This guide explains who weekend delivery suits, what to expect, how assessments work, and how to book. Throughout, you can explore dates and availability on our main SMSTS courses page.

What is the SMSTS course

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme is a comprehensive programme for site managers, project managers, supervisors, and anyone with health and safety responsibilities. The course builds practical competence in planning, monitoring, controlling, and organising safe site operations. For upcoming dates and locations, view our SMSTS courses.

Who a weekend SMSTS suits

  • Working managers who cannot afford weekday absence
  • Candidates balancing family or shift patterns
  • Freelancers who want to learn while maintaining income during the week
  • Those who prefer shorter study blocks across consecutive weekends

Weekend delivery formats

Weekend schedules typically follow one of the formats below. Check current options on our SMSTS courses page.

  • Two weekends in a row
  • Alternate weekends across a month
  • Blended live online sessions on Saturdays and Sundays

Live online or classroom

Both routes lead to the same CITB recognised certificate. Choose the environment that best supports your focus and learning style.

  • Live online weekend
    • Attend from home with real time trainer interaction
    • Structured agenda with breakout tasks and group activities
  • Classroom weekend
    • Face to face support and peer discussion
    • Ideal if you learn best in person

What the weekend SMSTS covers

  • Risk assessment and method statements
  • CDM roles and practical controls
  • High risk activities such as temporary works, lifting operations, and excavation
  • Behavioural safety and culture
  • Monitoring, auditing, and continuous improvement

Duration and study commitment

The full SMSTS is five days. On weekend schedules you will complete the same guided learning hours, just distributed across Saturdays and Sundays. Expect reading, exercises, and short preparation tasks between sessions. Resource packs and revision guidance are provided on our SMSTS courses page.

Assessment and certification

Assessment includes trainer marked activities and a final test. On successful completion you receive the CITB Site Safety Plus SMSTS certificate, typically valid for five years. You can then maintain your qualification with an SMSTS Refresher. See details and availability on SMSTS courses.

Entry guidance

  • Good spoken and written English to participate and complete assessments
  • A role that benefits from site management level safety knowledge
  • A willingness to engage in scenarios and apply controls to real work settings
