If you're working in construction management or supervisory roles, understanding the SMSTS meaning, how the SMSTS certificate works, and what to expect in the SMSTS test or exam is crucial for compliance and career progression. In this blog, we’ll answer the most searched questions about SMSTS training—including mock exams, refresher test questions, and whether it qualifies you for the Black CSCS card.
Whether you're new to the course or looking to renew your certificate, Target Zero Training offers flexible, accredited CITB SMSTS and SMSTS Refresher courses across the UK.
What Does SMSTS Mean?
SMSTS stands for Site Management Safety Training Scheme. It’s a five-day CITB-approved course designed for:
- Site Managers
- Project Managers
- Supervisors
- Business owners involved in construction site operations
It equips you with essential health and safety knowledge, helping you understand site legislation, risk assessment, CDM regulations, and how to manage safely on site.
What Is the SMSTS Certificate?
Once you pass the course, you'll receive an official CITB SMSTS certificate, valid for 5 years. This proves you’ve met the health and safety standards expected of senior construction personnel.
To stay compliant after 5 years, you must take the SMSTS Refresher course, which is a condensed 2-day update of the full training.

Can I Get a Black CSCS Card with SMSTS?
A common misconception is that SMSTS alone qualifies you for the Black CSCS Manager Card. While SMSTS is essential for site managers, the Black Card requires a Level 6 NVQ in Site Management or Construction Contracting Operations.
So, while SMSTS is a crucial part of your management training, you’ll need to combine it with an NVQ to get the Black Card.
Need the NVQ too? We offer both – just ask!
