If you are a site manager or aspiring manager, the SMSTS Refresher course is essential. The construction sector continues to change, and duty holders must show current knowledge, proven competence, and strong safety leadership. At Target Zero we deliver one of the most respected SMSTS Refresher courses in the United Kingdom, designed to keep you compliant and confident in your role.
This guide explains who the SMSTS Refresher is for, how it works, what you will learn, and how you can prepare using our free practice tools.
Why the SMSTS Refresher Matters for Every Site Manager
Your SMSTS certificate is valid for five years. Before it expires you must complete the refresher course to keep your qualification active. If it lapses, you will need to complete the full course again which costs more and takes longer.
The SMSTS Refresher brings you up to date with:
• Current health and safety legislation
• CDM responsibilities
• Construction risk management
• Behavioural safety
• Environmental requirements
• Safety leadership and communication
Everything we deliver at Target Zero is focused on practical site application.
Who Should Attend the SMSTS Refresher
The refresher is required if:
• Your existing certificate is still valid
• You manage construction teams
• You monitor or control safety onsite
• You are a duty holder under CDM regulations
It is ideal for site managers, project managers, supervisors moving into management roles, and senior team members.
What You Will Learn During the Target Zero SMSTS Refresher
You will cover every core CITB requirement, including:
• Recent updates to legislation and guidance
• Managerial responsibilities in safety leadership
• Effective communication and behavioural influence
• Managing significant risks
• Fire safety, work at height, temporary works, plant and equipment
• Environmental risk and sustainability considerations
We use practical scenarios so your learning transfers directly to your work.
How the SMSTS Refresher Assessment Works
The exam is straightforward when you understand the structure. It checks your knowledge rather than trying to catch you out.
You can prepare by using our free practice questions. These mirror the style of the real assessment and help you feel confident.
