What Is the SMSTS Refresher Course and Who Needs It?

Introduction

If you’ve already completed the full SMSTS course and your certificate is about to expire, the SMSTS Refresher Course is exactly what you need to stay compliant and continue working legally in your role. Offered as a 2-day CITB-accredited programme, this refresher is essential for construction site managers and supervisors who want to renew their qualification without retaking the full 5-day training.

What Is the SMSTS Refresher Course?

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) Refresher is a two-day training course designed for those who have previously completed the full SMSTS qualification. Delivered either online or in-person, the course provides an updated understanding of:

• Current health and safety legislation
• CDM regulations
• Risk assessments and method statements
• Site management responsibilities
• Environmental management

It’s a condensed version of the full SMSTS course but assumes prior knowledge, so it's fast-paced and focused.

Who Needs the SMSTS Refresher Course?

You should take the SMSTS Refresher if you:

• Hold a valid SMSTS certificate that is due to expire (within 5 years of the issue date)
• Work as a site manager, project manager, or senior supervisor
• Are required to stay CITB compliant for principal contractor roles
• Want to renew your qualification without repeating the full course

Important: If your SMSTS certificate has already expired, you are not eligible for the refresher and must complete the full 5-day course again.

Why It Matters

Failing to renew your SMSTS certificate before it expires can:

• Leave you non-compliant with industry standards
• Disqualify you from holding senior site positions
• Delay or prevent access to CSCS Black Card applications
• Affect your ability to meet main contractor requirements

The refresher ensures you remain updated with the latest changes in legislation, best practice, and site safety responsibilities.
