If you’re starting a career in construction or applying for your CSCS Green Card, the CITB Health and Safety Awareness (HSA) course is likely your first step in Health Safety Courses. But what exactly does this course cover, who is it for, and why is it so important?
In this blog, we’ll break down the benefits of taking an HSA course — and why thousands of construction workers in the UK complete it every year.
What Is the CITB HSA Course?
The Health and Safety Awareness course is a 1-day CITB-accredited training programme designed to teach new workers the basics of staying safe on construction sites. It's part of the Site Safety Plus suite and is one of the requirements for obtaining a CSCS Green Labourer Card.
Delivered online or in person, the course covers:
- The importance of health and safety on site
- Understanding of roles and responsibilities
- Common site hazards and how to avoid them
- Safe manual handling and working at height
- Protective equipment and emergency procedures
Who Needs the HSA Course?
The CITB HSA course is ideal for:
- New entrants to the construction industry
- Labourers applying for the CSCS Green Card
- Individuals looking to build basic site safety knowledge
- Employers needing to train staff quickly and cost-effectively
If you're unsure what training you need for a Labourer card, this course is almost always the first requirement — alongside passing the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test.
Why Is Health and Safety Training So Important?
Construction remains one of the most high-risk industries in the UK. A lack of awareness can lead to:
- Accidents
- Injuries
- Legal penalties
- Project delays
The HSA course helps prevent these outcomes by giving workers a strong foundation in legal responsibilities and safe working practices. For employers, it ensures you meet your duty of care under UK health and safety legislation.
Why Choose Target Zero for Your CITB Health Safety Courses?
At Target Zero Training, we deliver the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course online, making it easy for you or your workforce to train from anywhere in the UK. Our courses are:

What Happens After the Health Safety Courses?
